Niagara-on-the-Lake,
the first capital of colonial Upper Canada, figured prominently in
the War of 1812. In Victorian times, the Town became a fashionable
vacation destination, graced by the elegant summer homes of the rich
and famous.
Today, the Town's many lovingly restored heritage homes, tree-shaded
streets and horse-drawn carriages enable residents and visitors alike
to experience the simple pleasures and relaxed pace of small town
life at its most gracious.
The Shaw Festival attracts thousands of devoted patrons from all over
North America to Niagara-on-the-Lake. This world class theatre company
performs from April through November in three theatres located right
in the heart of Town.
The Town, surrounded by vineyards, is home to more than a dozen award
winning estate wineries. Each winery offers tours and tastings; some
host concerts and other special events; others feature restaurants.
Winery tours are popular and readily available - by bicycle, van,
or even vintage car.
Annual festivals and events - including the Strawberry, Cherry and
Peach festivals, Shaw Show of Arts/Crafts, historic house tours, garden
tours, Candlelight Stroll, Santa Claus Parade and Ice Wine Celebration
- make Niagara-on-the-Lake a Town for all seasons.
